حروف ربط هم بسته (correlative conjunctions) به نوعی مانند یک تیم دو نفره هستند. حروف ربط هم بسته شباهت زیادی به حروف ربط هم پایه (coordinating conjunctions) دارند بدین دلیل که بخش های همسان در جملات را به یکدیگر متصل می سازند. آن ها به صورت جفت می آیند و شما باید هر جزء از این حروف را در جای مختلفی از جمله استفاده کنید. این حروف نام خود را از این جهت می گیرند که با هم کار می کنند (co) و یک عنصر جمله را به دیگری مرتبط می کنند. مانند دیگر اجزای تشکیل دهنده جملات، این حروف نیز دارای قواعد خاصی هستند که بایستی به آن ها توجه گردد. در شکل زیر، متداول ترین اشکال این حروف ربط را می توانید مشاهده بفرمایید.
نکات دستوری
همخوانی فعل و فاعل (Subject-Verb Agreement)
همانند تمامی جمله واره ها (clauses)، در هنگام استفاده از حروف ربط هم بسته (correlative conjunctions) بایستی همخوانی فعل و فاعل را رعایت نمود. همخوانی فاعل و فعل بدین معناست که هنگامی که دو مورد (یا بیشتر) توسط حرف ربط به هم اتصال داده می شوند و نقش فاعل جمله را ایفا می کنند، حالت فعل (یعنی مفرد یا جمع) همیشه از آخرین گزینه تبعیت می کند. بنابراین، چند گزینه مفرد یک اسم جمع ایجاد نمی کنند.
Either Crystal or Julia wants to come with us to the festival. (The verb should be “wants,” not “want”)
Neither my cousin nor my siblings enjoy roller coasters. (The verb “enjoy” follows the second item in the pair of subjects.)
همخوانی ضمایر (Pronoun Agreement)
همخوانی ضمایر بدین معناست که در هنگام استفاده از حروف ربط هم بسته (correlative conjunctions) با دو عنصر پیشین (Antecedent)، ضمایر بایستی با دومین عنصر همخوانی داشته باشند.
Neither your mother nor her sisters are planning to donate their portion of the estate to charity.
Neither the students nor the teacher likes her new textbooks.
ساختار موازی (Parallel Structure)
حروف ربط هم بسته (correlative conjunctions) نیاز به ساختارهای موازی دارند تا جملات متعادلی را تولید نمایند. این بدین معناست که از لحاظ گرامری شکل یکسانی داشته باشیم.
